Deposit Insurance in Austria: How Your €100,000 Is Protected
Wüstenrot notes that balances on savings accounts and current accounts are protected by statutory deposit insurance of €100,000 per customer and per institution.
How it works
EU rules require every member state to guarantee deposits up to €100,000 per depositor per bank. In Austria, the scheme is run by Einlagensicherung AUSTRIA for most banks.
What is covered
- Current (giro) accounts,
- savings accounts and fixed-term deposits,
- balances are added together per institution.
What is not covered
- Securities such as shares and funds (held separately, not via the deposit guarantee).
- Insurance products — these fall under insurance supervision.
Temporary higher protection
In certain life events, like the sale of a private home, EU rules allow temporarily higher protection. Ask your bank for details.
General information. Check the official Einlagensicherung AUSTRIA website for binding rules.
